What are CSS, HTML and XHTML, and what is the difference?

This is the code that makes up your website. Take a look at this page by going to View in your menu bar and then selecting the View Page Source option. A lot of code will appear that at first glance doesn't seem to make sense - that's XHTML.

Ok, first there was HTML (HyperText Markup Language) which was designed as a common language so that all computers and all browsers could look at the same file and it would display roughly the same thing.

This is the basis of the web, and by using Hyperlinks we could connect multiple pages together to make websites.

The problem is that they looked dull and weren't very flexible, so some people more clever than me came up with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). These sheets contain additional code to specify fonts, pictures, colours and more recently, position.

This made a great impact, and the web started to develop at great speed. So much so that some more clever people decided to boost and extend HTML so that it could do more things, more efficiently. This is XHTML (Extensible HyperText Markup Language), more powerful, leaner and cleaner than before, and is the backbone of most websites on the web today.
