What is Flash and do you build websites in Flash? Flash is a method of delivering electronic content over the web, developed in 1996 by Macromedia. You will know it mostly for cartoon-like animations, games and long loading times. Unfortunately Flash gets a bit of bad press as it has been abused by graphic designers and non-web professionals as a route to getting their ideas onto the web. It is easily to learn and use, as it shares a lot of the common tools that designers use in their other applications. A bit like a gun in the hands of a child. The main problem is that inexperienced designers will try and build entire sites in Flash that rely on you having the appropriate Flash player, the bandwidth and the patience to view their carefully crafted site. But the web being what it is, it is all too easy to click on to the next site rather than watching a progress bar. The best approach to this media type is to build a solid, compliant XHTML website and to enhance it with Flash elements intergrated within it. It still looks impressive, but on the plus side it will load faster, index better in search engines and not frustrate your users... |
