Googlewhack - The myth and mystery of search engines
googlewhack
There is a lot of myth and mystery around how search engines work, and a lot of web tricksters will tell you that they know tricks and hacks to get you to the top of the list, when millions of people all over the planet are trying to do exactly the same thing...

Basically, the creators and maintainers of the search engines want to give the best results for whatever search it’s visitors make. They design and program the search engine so it filters out as much rubbish as possible to get to the ‘good stuff’. These guy’s have got big brains, and to try and out-think them is just insulting.

Sometimes poor sites slip through a loophole, but as soon as this is identified it is closed, and becomes a Bad Developer Dead End.

The best way to get good ranking and keep it, is simply to build a good site, with great informative content, links and some well chosen keywords. Keywords (meta) alone will not get your site ranked, but the points all add up.
It is constantly changing, day by day, hour by hour. There are discussion groups trying to decide the best way to work the system. Spiders or Robots are continually scouring the web, updating and reassessing. But, it’s the humans that count, human editors are like gold.

After you submit your site to be indexed, it could actually be visited by a human editor that will determine if your site is good enough to be included in the search engine. This is one of the best guards against the rubbish that gets between you and that first page ranking.

If search engine inclusion is what you are after (it’s not the only way to promote a website) try and view it the way the search engines do. Does it have good concise information or is it just sales waffle? Is your site linked (the basis of the web) to other areas/sites, connecting and sharing information. Does it have ‘real’ text or are they just optimised images?

There are too many variables to list here, check the blog. Watch out for those dot-com-con-men...
