Illustration and Commercial Art

From a background and training in art and design, I am also able to create attractive and original illustration in County Mayo, to add depth and enhance leaflets, brochures and websites.

Illustration and commercial art differs from fine art, as its function is to be part of a design to illustrate a point, product, concept or place. This often takes the form of inset or spot illustrations to illuminate the text, from instruction manuals to children's story books, and come in a variety of styles and techniques.

Illustration is a useful tool to create a design style or impression for young or start-up businesses, web-based businesses, service based businesses with no tangible products, and also businesses that are not very photogenic or are difficult to photograph.

I try and use as much illustration in my design work as I can, to enrich the message or meaning and engage the reader. It is quite common to use stock illustration (not clip art) for this purpose, in the same way that all designers use stock photography, for economy and speed.

However, when possible, I like to create original renderings and appropriate imagery using mixed media including; computer illustration software, photo-montaging, paint, pencil and ink. This can be produced in a number of styles and techniques. I favour simple, graphic and bold styles, and I am often influenced by other professional illustrators, the target audience, art, cinema and the media.

My experience in this area includes; spot illustrations for leaflets, brochures and reports, book covers, technical illustrations, point of sale, artists impressions, character design and illustrations for models and packaging.
